ATCO needed to optimize their Oracle Analytics Cloud (OAC) framework while consolidating critical components, including the OAC Catalog, Repository and Security. Their goal was boosting operational efficiency and refining the overall user experience within the analytics domain. HEXstream delivered a refined analytics framework and an enhancement of ATCO's operational landscape, establishing a more efficient and user-centric future with their analytics.

Centralized Platform for All Operational Reporting

The utility, like many organizations, uses a broad range of customer-facing applications that require consistent data.  Accordingly, HEXstream built a centralized platform to achieve a single version of truth across all disparate data. The platform was designed to guarantee alignment of internal and external outage information. Per the client's requirements, HEXstream also developed the capability to capture individual ETRs at the customer level. As a result, operational reporting and analytics became more customer-centric, improving both customer service and reliability reporting.

HEXstream built active storm comparison capabilities for the client, enabling users to compare real-time storm performance data to historical data from prior storms.  The resulting analytics system delivered much-needed granularity, including the ability to clearly define outages, ETRs, and crew performance during overlapping storms.  The overlapping storm detail was critical in order for the utility to meet its regulatory requirements regarding service restoration after an outage.

Digitalizing Outage Management Ops for a Publicly-Traded Power Utility

HEXstream designed and implemented a custom data warehouse and Member Profile Visualizations. The project was executed leveraging HEXstream's RAPID methodology to quickly show results. Member Profile Visualizations gave the credit union a more comprehensive look at trends among existing customers including age, credit score, transaction types, total loan balance, and more.

Data validation was completed using HEXstream's Koios Data Accuracy Platform. This confirmed that the data could be trusted and provided guidelines to improve data governance practices. This was done with the client's existing architecture, so there was no need to invest in new technology.

HEXstream's analysis indicated good data quality, so there were no issues that would cause the validity of Member Profile analytics to be questioned.

The Member Profile dashboard visualizations provided the Credit Union with details about their customers and revealed insights not previously available to them.

The dashboards linked account information with member information so the Credit Union could identify trends within specific products, demographic groups, and account types to better understand their business and their customers.

The utility first purchased Oracle Utilities Analytics (OUA), which provides a sophisticated data model with real-time data capabilities and mappings that are tied to Oracle’s NMS system and met the client's enterprise data reporting requirements.

HEXstream created the mappings necessary to load both new and historical data from the 2 NMS systems, ABB, and Intergraph into the pre-existing enterprise data warehouse.  Data points, specific terminology, field definitions and other settings were inconsistent between Oracle NMS and the ABB and Intergraph systems.

HEXstream helped the utility to redefine their Data Governance policies to support Master Data Management and Metadata Management associated with the enterprise outage management solution.

HEXstream built a Master Data Repository that provides an enterprise view of the utility's outage data, spanning all 4 jurisdictions and delivering a single source of truth company-wide. HEXstream designed  a custom OUA interface to dictate the flow of data through the application.  Using the 

 engine, the HEXstream team constructed a real-time data feed to populate the OUA dashboards requiring real-time data.

The unique design allowed users to view the separate NMS and GIS systems at both a summary level and in detail with high granularity, depending on the goals of the inquiry.  Additionally, HEXstream built in auto-refresh capabilities for multiple OUA dashboards, and the team designed the new interface using the utility's logos and colors. 

As part of the effort to strengthen outage response, the client tasked HEXstream with upgrading their legacy call-taking system.  Their existing system prevented users from exporting reports and included minimal search capabilities.  Not only did this make the system less user friendly, but it also limited the utility's use of customer call data for reporting and analytics. 

Under the improved system, built with the latest Microsoft .NET Core, customer calls to report outages and other events automatically generated tickets in the client's outage management system, prompting swift corrective action.  Unlike the old system, the upgraded version included device agnostic pages and broadened search capabilities.  The utility could now export its reports in a variety of formats, including .csv, .txt, .xlsx, as well.  The utility's call-taking system was now faster and more responsive, resulting in better data collection and analytics to drive better customer service.

HEXstream designed and implemented a near-real-time outage map to strengthen the utility's storm response capabilities.  The map featured a search function filtering by both address and event, as well as both static and dynamic weather data overlays.  As a result, the client scored very well with their regulators for storm performance in each of several consecutive weather events.

To best meet the needs of the utility and its surrounding communities, HEXstream designed a robust customer communications system centered around a shared community portal in Microsoft SharePoint.  In order to make critical, time-sensitive data (i.e. wire-downs and life support customers) available quickly, HEXstream used .NET-based Windows Scheduler Jobs to automate the flow of data from Oracle Utilities Analytics into the SharePoint portal. 

Continued use of the Community Portal has resulted in better customer relations for the utility across its several jurisdictions as town officials benefit from better access to utility data.

HEXstream implemented OUA to replace Focal Point, the utility's legacy reporting software.  During the implementation, the team configured OUA so that it would be populated with all NMS data 

The utility's team, replete with talented business and data analysts, fully grasped their organization's needs from the outset of the project.  As a result, HEXstream designed and executed several customizations to fill in gaps left by the out-of-the-box OUA offering.

These enhancements included a fully-customized Outages Dashboard showing Details at three levels: the switch plan level, across all events, and the lead event level.  HEXstream also added the ability to view crew activity at the switch plan level.  HEXstream also added fully-customized Major Incident and Customers Dashboards to meet the unique needs of the utility.

Throughout the engagement, HEXstream trained the utility's IT Team to handle OUA upgrades & installations, which they are now able to perform independently.

At the outset of our engagement, the utility's data centers were geographically distributed throughout their service territory.  To resolve network issues including connectivity and latency, HEXstream migrated their data centers to a central location before migrating OUA and OUA data to these centers.  Upon finishing the migration, HEXstream worked with the utility to create a Disaster Recovery Server to mitigate the risk of data loss in the event of an outage or other server interruption.

Outside of OUA implementation, HEXstream has been working on data integrations to ingest data and process it so that it feeds into connected downstream applications, including other analytics tools like PowerBI and for reliability reporting.

One such integration involves sending restored outage events and associated outage remarks from NMS to OUA and then to CISCO OUTH (outage history), either real-time or batched at a minimum of every ten minutes.  The OUA process will truncate and reload the CISCO DB2 data when updates come in on a restored event to provide the latest changes correctly (e.g., deleted steps or events are removed) to OUTH.

HEXstream helped move the utility’s reliability team from an outdated, excel-based tool to OUA.  At the time of publication, the team is working on feeding OUA Reliability Data into a separate, dedicated Reliability application.  HEXstream is also developing new Reliability Dashboards that allow for segmentation editing.  The team is completing a 10 year historical data migration into OUA to help analysts identify trends in past reliability performance and anticipate future issues.

Partnering With a California Utility to Establish a Robust Analytics Program

HEXstream implemented OUA to replace Focal Point, the utility's legacy reporting software.  Not only was Focal Point growing increasingly obsolete, but the acquisition by a larger utility added complexity to the client's reporting and analytics needs.  For instance, OUA maintained clear performance advantage over Focal Point when determining which events have been used to generate a given reliability index.

No two utilities are guaranteed to tackle reliability reporting the same way.  Consequently, the acquisition of the client utility by its new parent company prompted a new set of reporting wants and needs.  

The out-of-the-box reliability reporting offered by OUA did not satisfy the client's needs because the business rules required by the new parent company's board differed from those in OUA.  Consequently, HEXstream helped to build and implement custom calculations to address this discrepancy. 

Prior to the merger, the client's analysts had ten days to build an executive-facing reliability report.  Under new leadership, however, they were given only two days, and they needed to adapt quickly.  Prior to working with HEXstream, generating the report took about 40 minutes, repeating each time a change was made.  With HEXstream's help, the client cut down the data refresh cycle time to just five minutes - 

HEXstream has since designed a custom reliability reporting solution for the client built in Oracle Data Integrator.  It employs Utility360's pre-built reliability dashboards and custom reliability reports developed using Oracle Analytics Server, which are still actively in use at the utility today.  Presently, HEXstream continues to work with the client to provide ongoing support, build new reliability reports, and refine existing reporting. 

OUA Implementation\nHEXstream implemented OUA to replace Focal Point, the utility's legacy reporting software.  Not only was Focal Point growing increasingly obsolete, but the acquisition by a larger utility added complexity to the client's reporting and analytics needs.  For instance, OUA maintained clear performance advantage over Focal Point when determining which events have been used to generate a given reliability index.\nAutomated Reliability Reporting\nNo two utilities are guaranteed to tackle reliability reporting the same way.  Consequently, the acquisition of the client utility by its new parent company prompted a new set of reporting wants and needs.  \nThe out-of-the-box reliability reporting offered by OUA did not satisfy the client's needs because the business rules required by the new parent company's board differed from those in OUA.  Consequently, HEXstream helped to build and implement custom calculations to address this discrepancy. \nPrior to the merger, the client's analysts had ten days to build an executive-facing reliability report.  Under new leadership, however, they were given only two days, and they needed to adapt quickly.  Prior to working with HEXstream, generating the report took about 40 minutes, repeating each time a change was made.  With HEXstream's help, the client cut down the data refresh cycle time to just five minutes - \n8x faster than before\n.\nHEXstream has since designed a custom reliability reporting solution for the client built in Oracle Data Integrator.  It employs Utility360's pre-built reliability dashboards and custom reliability reports developed using Oracle Analytics Server, which are still actively in use at the utility today.  Presently, HEXstream continues to work with the client to provide ongoing support, build new reliability reports, and refine existing reporting. 

In the midst of an acquisition by a larger, multi-state investor-owned utility, the client engaged HEXstream to implement Oracle Utilities Analytics (OUA) as a replacement for their aging Focal Point reporting tool.  With the acquisition came a new set of corporate policies and expectations, including much shorter deadlines for reliability reporting.

Generating Reliability Reports 8x Faster After the Acquisition

The utility sought a cloud-based mobile workforce management solution to improve how the business managed its assets, work, and workforce. The newly implemented Oracle Field Service scheduling and dispatching tool incorporated IBM Maximo, the client’s enterprise asset management system, as the key integration point for asset tracking and field activity information. In addition, the application incorporated data from Cornerstone for competency and resource skill data to improve routing and dispatching, and it provided users with links to the ESRI GIS system to provide additional relevant data.

The real-time bidirectional flow of data between Oracle Field Service and Maximo relied on OIC. This included integration with Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse (OADW) and customizations within OIC. The newly automated real-time integration brought together Maximo's scheduling capabilities and OFS's field resource data to provide more comprehensive information than was previously available.

With all the data coming together, HEXstream could now provide the client with real-time insights into their transactional information rather than just sharing batch data at the end of each day. This has helped the client analyze and identify trends in their resource usage in various conditions.
